When zooming in on this picture to study all the nooks and crannies, I wondered if some of the architecture / decoration masks functional parts of the building--downspouts, chimneys, vents, etc...?
You're quite right - the turrets all house staircases and a certain amount of the services. However, the downspouts are all visible - mostly at the side of the Cathedral - proud Victoiran engineering at its best!
