Building in Progress

The construction of the Nave nears completion; the photograph probably dates from 1902. Note the statue of St Peter, bottom right. Intended for the crypt, it was found to be too large to get down the stairs! Here, it stands to the side, before being located in its present position at the back of the Cathedral.

could i ask where the original altar rail was and did it have gates? When was it removed and does it still exist?

There never was an altar rail at Westminster Cathedral, as it followed the design of Byzantine and early Christian basilicas. Wooden kneelers were brought forward during the Mass for Holy Communion to be given.
