The up-lighting of the vaults revealed the forms of the usually barely visible domes in a spectacular way. The photographs speak for themselves: etc
The bare surfaces will one day be covered in mosaic - a scheme for the design has recently been developed. However, the cost is prohibitive, and those who appreciate the stark and poignant atmosphere created by the undecorated vault will be able to enjoy it thus for a long time yet!
Thanks, Monsignor! This is fascinating. As a homeowner, I can only imagine the anxiety inspections like these must cause you. It is nice to see the structure is sound.
Westminster Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic community in England and Wales. This extraordinary house of God was opened in 1903, and its distinctive Byzantine architecture provides the visitor with what Sir John Betjeman called "a series of surprises".
